DO YOU CARE IF YOUR CLOTHING IS ECO-FRIENDLY?
Submitted by Valerie Donati on Thu, 04/15/2010 - 12:53
Well, that depends, doesn't it? The green wave is in full force and its popularity is creating a volume game. That's where it's at - volume. If you want to make a change you can start small, the grass roots level is excellent, but you have to grow. Because to change things you need mass volume. So, do I care if my clothes are eco-friendly, yes! But am I going to go out of my way to only purchase eco-friendly clothing? Probably not, unfortunately.
One of the BIGGEST perpetrators of our potential environmental demise is the cotton crop - it saps water from the world in remarkable amounts. And we all know, or should know, how scarce water is becoming. At least the kind you can safely drink.
To make a difference we would ALL have to start ONLY buying eco-friendly clothes. The demand in volume would be a game changer. First place to start, in my opinion, is with cotton items. If we only purchased items that came from sustainable farms AND factories that would create a massive shift. But that's not so easy to do. Chicken or the egg, wait for the good stuff to become readily available? Or, demand it now and forfeit ease in the process. I know what my heart says. I wish I could always follow my heart.

To Sheer Or Not To Sheer
Submitted by Valerie Donati on Mon, 03/15/2010 - 10:10Our agency represents various fashion and luxury brands. As such, we have a nice (and sometime early) take on what is trending in fashion, et al. Refinery29 has a great article that provides advice on how to wear a sheer top. Having worked with this "ongoing" trend for years now, I have my own advice...
If you don't have the right figure forgo anything sheer at all costs...- A nude cami can be just the ticket for sheer, but be prepared for people to stop and stare, until they've figured out that it's a nude cami and not your bare naked self...
- Be careful of jewelry, most everything sheer is prone to pricks. That fab necklace just may spell the death of your new EXPENSIVE sheer top…
- Sheer can kill. Just kidding, wanted to make sure I hadn't lost you…
- Sheer should be season appropriate - think spring/summer, when your goose pimples won't show through…
- Opt for sheer when you want to "say" elegant, not sexy. In defiance of common wisdom, sheer really isn't about sexy, and when it is, it almost always goes wrong…
So check our Refinery 29. They are definitely more sophisticated than I am when it comes to these types of subjects...
LOL!
IT’S NOT THE SCORE
Submitted by Valerie Donati on Fri, 07/10/2009 - 20:00
I’m learning how to play golf and since I’m pretty darn ambitious I want to be good all at once. Well, good luck. Golf isn’t like that, generally. I do know a man who started in his 40s (or maybe 50s) and won the championship at his club several years later. He’s a member of Atlantic and it’s a damned hard course, so that’s a major accomplishment, but he’s an amazing guy.
Anyway, something I’ve been told is it isn’t about the score, but each shot, one shot at a time. Ok, that sounds good in theory but when you’re out there and sweating the crappy last hole and fretting about the next one, it’s hard to stay in the moment. But that’s exactly how one should play, at least in the beginning. And that’s also a great way to approach business. Yes, you need to plan. Yes, you need to know what the competition is up to and what the trends are. But what you don’t need to do is sit around lamenting the business you lost or the account you think you need. One meeting at a time, one conversation at a time—this is a simple, but healthy way of moving forward. And once you actually do it, you’ll be surprised just how productive it can make you on a daily basis.
